Day 123: NYC Afterall

Ok, so we drank a bit of wine last night. This may bE part of the decision to not hike today. We actually woke up early. And Becca right away is saying that we need to go to NYC. We are right here afterall. When are we going to get another opportunity? So we packed up real fast and actually bactracked to get to the train station. However, the trains that stop at the AT station are very very limited. So we needed to hitch into pawling to get on.

The hitch was super easy. I think it was the second car that picked us up.

On the train ride into town Becca was giddy. Thats the best word I think. Giddy.
The train was relaxing. As we passed the small towns we quickly changed from rural, to burb, and then suddenly city. Maybe it's just that the rail lone is heavily wooded so we didn't see the gradual change. Maybe there are defined zones around the city. I guess we will never know.  Ever.

The is so much to say about our quick stop in Nyc. It's daunting to think about typing it out with my phone.

So our backpacks are.loaded.down with 5 days of food. We were not interested in schlepping them all over town. But we soon found out that after 9-11, the lockers were.removed from all the train stations. So we are in the main hall of Grand Central trying to figure out how to get rid of our packs, and also checking out the zodiac mural. By the way, Scorpio was.totally not represented! Wtf? Maybe there are two main halls amd the other signs are on a different ceiling?

Our bag solution was a business close by that stores luggage. It had mostly good reviews, but we couldn't help but feel sketched out when we were.directed to a non description door in the middle.of a block and told.to go to the 6th floor. It was weird. But again, not interested in schlepping. Thats a good word.

So free of our packs, it was time to roam. But where to go? Facebook reach out time. Thanks new.york knowledgeable friends for all the suggestions.

we walked to Bryant park and watched some ping pong.

We went to the nearby Japanese bookstore and got some sushi. Oh my god sushi. It wasn't prepared right in front of us, but it was still amazing.

Then we wandered to time square and gawked at the giant tvs. For some reason there were about 50 people crowded in this one spot looking at a particular screen. At first i thought they were waiting for their tour bus but then, the crowd showed up on the screen and everyone came out of the gaze daze. Then a heart appeared and said kiss now. Aha. Mystery solved. We found out we were in the corner of the most zoomed our shot and got a selfie? A picture of you on a TV is like a selfie right?

Next, we walked to the Highline park. On the way we stopped at Rudys, where they give you free hot.dogs with your beer. Sweet deal. We had been hearing about this highline place for a few years now, as it was the rage in urban renewal blogs and news a few years back. It's was.a wonderful park, though almost too wonderful because there were so many people walking it that it was like a two way river of people. To stop and look at something required timing and precision to jump out. Same goes for getting back into the stream.

We next mistakenly entered the Chelsea market. I though it was.going to be a large open warehouse thing, but instead it was just a tunnel of weird shops and people eating lobster.

One result of the NYC reach out was that Becca got a hold of her high school friend, Julius amd found out he was having his birthday party today at 2 and invited.us over. So we next made.our way back up to 50th and got to hang out on the beautiful terrace of his building. The birthday party was perfect. We got to have cold beer, sit in rocking chairs and watch Julius and company bash 4 horse pinatas. They had named them too. Horsia de Rossi, Pony Danza, Princess Neigh-a, and Thomas Equine-as. That last one probably didn't need to be hyphenated. I don't know.

Finally, we had made plans with our friends from last year's Burning Man who were.part of our camp, Jesse and Amit. They live outside the city and were.coming to town to see a ball game. They ended.up not going to the game, but were able to come pick us up near the sketchy luggage place and take us back to their place in the burbs north of town. Their neigh or hood was even on the same train line we would need to get back to pawling. It was perfect. We got to shower, do laundry, and drink whiskey. By midnight, I may have had a bit too much whiskey since when I came back with a refill everyone's eyes.popped.out of their head amd asked if my cup was ALL whiskey. I didn't know what they were talking about until I looked and saw for myself what I had done. Oops. Yes, that is a full glass.of whiskey. I guess I wasn't paying attention to the pour.
Time for night night I guess.
